Dear Students:

Dean Diane McFarlin

Dean Diane McFarlin

Welcome to the 2014-2015 academic year!

This will be a milestone year for CJC, thanks to an impressive array of new programs.

The most ambitious among them is launch of The Agency, our new integrated communication agency that will provide Advertising and Public Relations students with the same level of professional experiences that our Journalism and Telecommunication students get in the Innovation News Center. Executive Director Andy Hopson is onboard to oversee remodeling of what used to be the Student Services space off the atrium. He is working with agency leaders across the country, as well as faculty and students, to develop a business plan that will make this endeavor groundbreaking. We hope to cut the ribbon in January. Stay tuned for more information as progress is made.

PATH (Professional Advising and Teaching Hub) is now open for business. We have four full-time academic advisers onboard to help you fully capitalize on your time at Weimer.

We are rolling out a redesigned curriculum that heightens the emphasis on digital communications, reinforces the fundamentals of storytelling through words and images, and adds a new program in data journalism.

Seven new full-time faculty members have joined us, and our bench of adjunct professors includes front-line professionals and retired AP reporter Terry Anderson. Anderson, who will be teaching a course in international journalism, became a household name when he was held hostage in the Middle East for nearly seven years during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

Two new programs, The Innovators Series and Science Journalists in Residence, will bring industry luminaries to Weimer, starting with Storyful founder Mark Little next month.

I hope you will help make college history by participating in as many of these initiatives as you can manage. At CJC, your education occurs both inside and outside the classroom.

Go Gators!

Dean McFarlin
